Throughout my life, I have used technology but not as much as when the pandemic hit. This was something that made me get out of my comfort zone and figure out home to help students over different platforms. We also have all types of different agencies that help get technology resources in all the hands of students and laws get passed to say technology is ok to be used. I think the pandemic pushed for learning technology fast so that people could still get their basic needs met.
Before the pandemic, I would call
myself a Technocrat/Techno
Traditionalist because I was
comfortable where I was and was able
to still do my job effectively. The
pandemic pushed me to be a Techno
Traditionalist/ Techno Constructivist
because I had to support students in
getting their education and I had to
take care of my own children in their
education. You could even go to see a
doctor so if you didn’t know how to use technology you could not see a doctor for physical or mental health. As a college student,
I needed to know how to use technology or I could finish my degree.
One thing that I did see as an educator is no amount of technology and replacing students being in a classroom and interacting with each other.
Studies have shown students had learning lose during the pandemic. Students still need to know an educator cares about them because a
computer can’t do that. Having an educator in front of a student and teaching
the student the best way they learn is priceless. You can have a student take
one standard test and it will tell a little about them but it should not tell their whole story. There has to
be another way to show that a student is taking in information or how they see a topic.
Having educators be held to a standard is important to show that they are helping students learn but if a
student does pass a test, should not show if they are a “good” or “bad” teacher. A test does always show that we are not "
leaving" students behind. I liked how in
TedTalk he compares testing in schools to his cholesterol test. We do need some types of tests but not everything needs to be mature in test form.
